How to Get Acupuncture Through the VA in Utah

Yes. The VA covers acupuncture for enrolled veterans through the VA Community Care Network (CCN). When your VA primary care provider submits a referral and it's approved, you receive acupuncture from a community provider — typically at no cost to you.

Four steps:

1. Tell your VA Primary Care Provider. Message them on the My HealtheVet app or call your clinic's nurse line and say: "I have pain and I want to try acupuncture." That one sentence starts the process.
2. Your PCP submits the referral through the Community Care Network.
3. Name your provider to the CCN scheduler. The scheduler — not your doctor — is who actually routes your referral. When they contact you, tell them the clinic you want.
4. Your clinic takes it from there. At Ignition Health, once your referral routes to us, keeping it active is our job, not yours.

When you're enrolled in VA healthcare and your referral is approved through Community Care, treatment is typically covered at no out-of-pocket cost, subject to your VA copay status.

You can request any in-network Community Care provider. The key: make sure the CCN scheduler hears the clinic's name. Telling your doctor helps, but the scheduler routes the referral.

Often, yes — and most veterans don't know this. Separate complaints (neck pain, low back, knee, and mental health concerns) may each qualify for their own referral. Each referral covers a set number of visits within a set window and renews in cycles while the VA sees a continued medical need.
