What to Expect at Your First Acupuncture Visit

Two sessions, back-to-back, the same day — not weeks apart:

1. Comprehensive Evaluation. A full picture before we treat anything: metabolic health assessment, mental and emotional health assessment, postural and muscle health evaluation, and a traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis.
2. Your First Treatment. Right after your evaluation — we start treating what we find immediately.
3. Your Plan. You leave with clear goals and an individualized treatment plan built around exactly what you need.

Acupuncture needles are hair-thin — nothing like the needles used for shots. Most people feel a brief tap or a dull, heavy sensation at the point, and many find treatment deeply relaxing enough to doze off. If you're needle-sensitive, tell us — gentler techniques work too.

It varies. Many people feel a real shift in the first visit. After your evaluation you'll know what your course looks like and what to expect.

We don't do fifteen rushed minutes. Each visit combines multiple modalities as your case needs: acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, “dry needling,” moxibustion, fire cupping, infrared heat, manual therapy, joint mobilization, TuiNa, trigger-point work, and more — a combination valued at over $380 if booked separately.

Acupuncture performed by a trained, licensed practitioner has an outstanding safety record across a medicine estimated to be more than 2,500 years old. Needles are individually wrapped, sterilized by the manufacturer, opened only at the moment of use, and disposed of afterward — never reused. Other than an occasional small bruise, side effects are rare.

It depends on your condition. There are hundreds of acupuncture points on the body, but most needling happens on the arms from the elbows down and the legs from the knees down, plus the abdomen, back, and ears. Auricular (ear) acupuncture alone has over 200 points that communicate with the brain through the cranial nerves — one reason it's a hallmark treatment for pain, PTSD, and addiction recovery.

Yes — but tell your practitioner if you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant, since certain points are avoided during pregnancy.

A few things that make your treatment work better:

• Eat a light meal an hour or two before — arriving over-hungry can cause lightheadedness, and overeating works against you too.
• Wear loose, comfortable clothing — most points are between the knees and ankles and the elbows and wrists, so clothes that roll up easily (sweats, shorts) are ideal. A gown is available if needed.
• Bring your notes and a list of current medications.
• Skip alcohol shortly before or after treatment, and avoid heavy exertion afterward — give your body time to absorb the work.
• Be on time — your appointment time is reserved for you. Missed appointments without 24 hours' notice may be charged.
